Introducing Natrellis®
Sugarcane-based Packaging

Natrellis®, a dual-ovenable package made with upcycled sugarcane fiber blended with other U.S. grown
plant fibers, is born through a partnership of Sonoco Products Company and Tellus Products – combining
decades of experience with packaging design, materials, science and responsible sugarcane farming and
milling practices.

The Natrellis® portfolio consists of microwaveable and conventional oven-compatible packaging designed by engineers with decades of expertise in cook-in performance packaging, keeping the consumer experience top-of-mind.

Tellus upcycles sugarcane fiber from the sugar milling process, blends it with other U.S. grown plant fibers, and converts it to compostable packaging for foodservice products such as plates, bowls, and take-out containers. Tellus is jointly owned by Florida Crystals Corporation, Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida and American Sugar Refining, Inc., and is part of ASR Group.

Sonoco, a 120-year-old packaging provider, specializes in all types of packaging to include rigid paperboard, flexible and rigid plastic for the food industry.

Natrellis® products feature a highly engineered surface that delivers outstanding moisture, oil and grease resistance during cooking and content enjoyment. This helps maintain the package strength during all phases of use, preventing loss of food moisture and eliminating the concern of wicking through the package to surfaces beneath. Within the portfolio, there is a family of films built for strong heat-seals around the perimeter of the tray lip – preventing leakage prior to freezing and maintaining adhesion during cooking (if desired), while remaining easy to peel for your consumer. The sealants are formulated for both hot roller and platen technologies.

Tellus’ manufacturing facility, which produces Natrellis® products, is located adjacent to the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative’s sugar mill in Belle Glade, Florida.

The Natrellis packaging portfolio includes:

  • Packaging molded from sugarcane fiber and other U.S. plant fibers

  • PFAS not added

  • Sonoco lidding, with options in rigid plastic and heat-sealed films

  • Commercial field service & development team to get your product on the shelf

Natrellis® is one of the newest members of Sonoco’s EnviroSense® family of sustainable packaging. The EnviroSense portfolio crosses a range of packaging materials, including cans made from 100-percent recycled paperboard, rigid plastic packaging containing post-consumer recycled content, mono-material flexible pouches that are recyclable, and innovative packaging made from agricultural fibers, such as the sugarcane by-product used in Natrellis. EnviroSense is more than just a packaging portfolio, it’s a way of thinking; a sensibility and a philosophy that guides our development of innovative, sustainable packaging.

About Tellus:

Tellus is jointly owned by three parent companies (Florida Crystals Corporation, Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida and American Sugar Refining, Inc.), and is part of ASR Group. Our farms are made up of 45 mostly family farms. They have proudly cultivated sugarcane and vegetables in South Florida for generations. Not only do they produce the sugarcane fiber our products are made of, but they also grow the fresh produce that fills your plates too. How’s that for end-to-end sustainability? Our manufacturing facility is adjacent to the sugar mill in Belle Glade, Florida belonging to one of our parent owners. Our new office building is right next door, and is LEED-certified®, LEED Silver®. Tellus runs on renewable biomass power from sugarcane fiber. The sugarcane fiber comes from the sugar mill and solar energy, making it an extremely efficient and environmentally sustainable manufacturing facility.
